about
Veļu laiks in the Latvian pagan tradition is the time in autumn (from late September till early November) when it is believed that the souls of the dead come to visit their loved ones. The Latvian notion of “veļi” includes not only the invisible souls, but also more tangible and moral properties of those who have lived before. It is believed that they can be felt and seen in the autumn fog that gathers on quiet roads in the evening. Still, less than a century ago, it was quite common in the Latvian countryside to leave food outside for them in gratitude for their protection and wisdom. Veļu laiks is time for reflection and its mystery can open up in different ways: it can give strength and wisdom, but it can also lead to dangerous and destructive paths.
lyrics
Kā norimusi vētra šis laiks,
Kad zemi migla klāj un sargā.
Mēs atstājam durvis vaļā,
Lai aizgājušie pārnāktu mājās.
Tiem laiks tik īss
Ik gadu uz zemes šīs.
Bet, kamēr būsim mēs,
Viņi atgriezīsies.
Aust rīts.
Tie veļu valstī aiziet
Un zintis nodod,
Solot atgriezties.
Kad viņu balsis nedzird vairs,
Zini, kamēr būsim mēs, viņi atgriezīsies.
Aust rīts.
Ar svētību tie aiziet
Un mieru atstāj, solot atgriezties.

Time of Souls (Veļu laiks)
This season like an abated storm
When mist covers and protects the soil.
We leave our door open
To let the souls come home again.
Their time is so short
Every year on this earth.
But as long as we stay here
They shall return.
Morning approaches
Returning them back to the realm of the dead.
Passing their wisdom to the living ones,
They promise to return.
When their voices have faded, remember
As long as we stay here they shall return.
Morning approaches
Returning them back and leaving their blessings.
Their peace shall stay with us until the next time of souls.
Sometimes I buy stuff after a very short listen deciding I like it. Somehow this has not steered me wrong yet. It does give me many excited moments of “wow this is even cooler than I thought!” This has all the weight, depth and darkness I could hope for. At moments reminds me of a band I loved who is no longer together, but Andvaka brings more into it. sageraven71
This is the kind of long meandering ballad-like doom that carries you in dimensions you don't want to leave. It is a comfy experience, yet crossed by glares of darkness; but those are never intimidating, they work more as a counterbalancing shade that adds complexity to the living flesh of this wonderful album. If you're going to go out in apocalyptic style you might want to have the 40 minute title track playing loud at your side. Bandcamp New & Notable Nov 12, 2013
Icelandic Blackened Funeral Doom. There are many experimental excursions here. It is both extremely dark & oppressive but at the same time it is also uplifting in places. It is an incredibly unique style & not at all an easy listen. However, it is well worth it as it is very rewarding as well! Recommended! bmurator
